A real recovery is going to be from Canada’s natural resources like oil and natural gas.
- Canada will need to generate a lot of foreign exchange to drive recovery. Even with the negative economic impacts from COVID, we’ve still exported $35,011,235,770 in oil and gas or 15.5% of Canada’s total exports as of June 2020
- The Task Force for Real Jobs, Real Recovery just released a new report detailing the economic benefits of leveraging Canada’s resources. They found that natural resources could add 2.6 million new jobs and 17% to Canada’s real GDP.
- Canada’s oil and gas industry is the largest investor of any industry for environmental and clean technology spending. They invested $1.45 billion for clean technology in 2016 alone.

Indigenous-led Backwoods Energy Services has begun oil well reclamation on 56 well-sites on the Enoch Cree Nation. Through the Alberta Department of Energy’s Site Rehabilitation Program (SRP) the company hopes to hire Indigenous workers to carry out abandonment on older oil and gas wells. Backwoods is also nominating wells on the Alexis Whitecourt Reserve #232 to be rehabilitated.
